Best of 2024
Join us in reflecting on the progress made and the exciting future ahead.

With bird flu leading to the mass depopulation of hens and the rise in backyard chicken keeping ignited by the pandemic, is there really anything to celebrate about eggs in 2024?
While these challenges are undeniable, the movement toward a compassionate, plant-based world is growing stronger each day. It’s clearer than ever that each of us has a role to play in creating change. From the rise of plant-based diets to growing awareness of the cruelty in the egg industry, real progress is unfolding.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on the strides we’ve made and look forward to the exciting journey ahead.
Animal Welfare Legislation Challenges
While some shifts in animal welfare legislation in 2024 are being celebrated, we must face the reality that these changes, though well-meaning, still fall short in addressing the deep-rooted issues within the egg industry. This year, attention has been placed on cage-free systems and technologies designed to reduce chick culling in hatcheries. On the surface, these might seem like steps forward, but they fail to challenge the heart of the problem: the relentless exploitation of chickens. Cage-free systems still confine hens in overcrowded, stressful environments, and male chicks—who can’t lay eggs—continue to be culled in vast numbers, regardless of technological advancements. These so-called “improvements” miss the mark because they don’t disrupt the core injustice: treating living beings as mere commodities for profit. True progress for animals means moving beyond exploitation entirely—embracing a world where no animal is harmed for food, and where industries profiting from their suffering are a thing of the past.
Animal Justice Project Activist Educating the Public During a Street Outreach in Cambridge, UK
That said, the growing awareness around the suffering of animals in the food industry is a shift worth celebrating. It’s inspiring to see more people question long-standing practices and demand better for the animals who share our world. More people than ever are talking about the realities behind their food choices, and this is just the beginning. At Egg-Truth, we want to ignite change, encouraging individuals to challenge old habits and embrace compassion. We’re excited to continue amplifying this growing wave of awareness and, together, we’ll push the conversation further—toward a future where plant-based food systems are the standard, and the exploitation of animals is a distant memory.
The Plant-based Egg Market
In the past few years, the plant-based egg alternative market has seen remarkable growth, driven by increasing consumer awareness of health, ethics, and sustainability. As more people embrace plant-based options, they are turning away from traditional egg production, which is notorious for its environmental impact—high water usage and significant greenhouse gas emissions. This shift toward more sustainable food choices presents a huge opportunity for the vegan egg market, with demand steadily rising.
Innovation has played a key role in this progress. Companies like Eat Just Inc. are creating plant-based eggs that closely resemble traditional ones in taste, texture, and functionality. Products like JUST Egg are now widely accepted and used in various dishes, while fortification with essential nutrients like Omega-3s, Vitamin B12, and iron addresses nutritional concerns. The growing availability of vegan eggs in major grocery chains and online platforms has made these alternatives more accessible, allowing even more people to incorporate them into their diets and driving the market’s expansion.
Our Work — Partnerships
One of the most invigorating parts of our work this year has been forging and strengthening partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations. We are especially excited about the flyer project with Kerstin Brueller—now available online and completely free—that offers invaluable information about the egg industry and realistic steps toward going egg-free. Not only is it ready to print and share, but it’s also a resource that can be adapted for any form of advocacy, from street outreach to leafleting at community events and online campaigning.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve gathered a wealth of materials for everyone who wants to engage in activism, whether in their spare time or as full-time advocates. Education about the egg industry and their labels, plus practical tips on leaving eggs behind, is now more accessible than ever.
Our work with Danzig Roost, Rooster Redemption, and The Browns’ Microsanctuary has been especially close to our hearts. These three incredible organizations hold a special place for roosters, the often-overlooked victims of the egg industry. Roosters, who are discarded due to their inability to lay eggs, find a loving home in these sanctuaries. Through our collaborations, we've worked together to raise awareness about the plight of roosters, showing that their lives matter too.
And we continue to support and share content with Little Cage Fighters, whose tireless work, beautiful content, and honest advocacy continue to inspire us. Together, we are amplifying the message that no animal deserves to be mistreated or discarded.
The Year(s) Ahead
As we head into the new year, we’re gearing up for some major changes—starting with a comprehensive website redesign. This will ensure that all the hard-earned information, the personal stories, and the actionable steps are easier to find and share. We want our online home to be a welcoming, organized space that encourages engagement and makes it simple for anyone to join the movement, learn about the issues, and find support in going egg-free.
In addition, we’re planning to invest in paid content to broaden our reach beyond what we’ve achieved organically, bringing these truths to new audiences who have yet to consider how their meals affect living, feeling beings.
We’re also committed to giving our newsletter more attention. By signing up, you’ll receive updates, deeper insights, opportunities to connect, and the encouragement you need to be part of this compassionate change. Follow us on social media for daily content to be shared and engaged with.
Gratitude
None of these accomplishments would be possible without the people who keep this movement alive every single day. Change of this magnitude isn’t achieved by one voice—it’s a chorus, a community, a family. Each of you, whether you’ve shared a recipe, posted an educational link, participated in political action, or simply taken a moment to reflect on your own habits, has played a part in this progress.
We also want to thank our volunteer, Michelle Bray, who has been tirelessly ready to lend a hand. And our advisors, both old and new, who work behind the scenes to keep our content accurate, up-to-date, and meaningfully presented. Your dedication, insight, and compassion form the backbone of everything we do.
Together, we are building a safe, supportive community where our collective efforts bring us closer to a vegan world—one where all animals can live without being forced into someone’s meal plan. It’s a long road ahead, but it’s a journey worth taking as we challenge ourselves, open our hearts, and believe in a kinder world.
Now, let’s move forward and make the coming year even brighter.

Peaceful Holidays and a Compassionate 2024
Embark on a reflective journey with our Executive Director, joining us in exploring the narratives that shaped our advocacy and sparked conversations about compassion. Your brief moment of reflection holds the power to deepen understanding and inspire meaningful connections toward a more compassionate world.
In these final days of 2023, we take a pause to reflect back on 12 months of dedicated animal advocacy. While more individuals are embracing compassion in their dietary choices, the reality remains that profound and widespread suffering persists in our world. Numerous new undercover investigations have exposed the extent of cruelty that we are determined to help eradicate.
As you join us in these reflections, presented by our Executive Director, Julie, take a moment to deliberate on your own culinary choices from this impactful year.
As I sit down at my desk, reflecting on the past 12 months of speaking up for the animals, a wave of emotions overcomes me. It's been a year of truth-telling and exposing the raw realities behind the egg and dairy industries. Despite these revelations, the world around me appears wrapped up in festive celebration.
The holidays have a unique way of masking the suffering that goes into the making of our favorite dishes. We've become experts at focusing on the end product—the golden-brown turkey, the rich cheesecake, and the creamy eggnog. Yet, it's time we shift our gaze to the process—the journey these products take from farm to table. A journey fraught with pain, suffering, and a deep disregard for life. This year, we've laid bare the harsh realities of animal agriculture, urging you to see beyond the joyful facade; urging you to pause. Take a moment to consider the weight of your choices and the impact on the lives of animals. It's not a call for guilt but a call for awareness, for a conscious decision to align actions with values.
Let's choose love over self-focused feasting. Let's extend our circle of kin in our celebrations and include those in our thoughts that are often overlooked. It's not about giving up joy; it's about finding joy in choices that spread love, not pain.
As you welcome the new year, rethink your resolutions to include not just personal aspirations but also a commitment to cultivating a less cruel plate.
Before we extend our wishes for a peaceful holiday, we like to share a glimpse of the month ahead. To conclude this year with a positive tone, we will be sharing our favorite videos and stories on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter; unveiling animals, advocates, sanctuaries, and organizations who are actively weaving the fabric of a more compassionate world. Please watch out for these and follow us on your preferred social media channel if you haven’t yet.
Stay alert for upcoming announcements that will bring you a refreshed Egg Truth newsletter and a brand new one for Dairy Truth. As we align our steps on the path of our collective journey, we extend our deepest gratitude for your ongoing support and care for the animals. May the new year usher in a future where every decision is rooted in compassion. Wishing you peaceful holidays and a promising start to the new year!

Open Letter To The Ontario Legislature (Canada)
“Psychology Today” published an article, dated June 16, 2020, by Marc Bekoff, Ph.D., professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado

Wednesday, June 17, 2020
Dear Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament,
“Psychology Today” published an article, dated June 16, 2020, by Marc Bekoff, Ph.D., professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and co-founder with Jane Goodall of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, regarding statements made by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Read here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/animal-emotions/202006/do-animals-think-or-feel
In particular, the OFA’s following statement to the Standing Committee on General Government regarding the Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act (Bill 156) as it relates to the cognitive ability of non-human animals:
"The concept of 'sentient beings' refers to beings with the power to reason and think. The term also implies beings with an awareness of their surroundings who respond to sensations, have cognitive thoughts and have the capacity to perceive and experience life subjectively. Feeling is a subjective state, available only to the animal feeling it. As animals and humans are built and function differently, it is unfair to automatically attribute the sensations experienced by humans to be the same as those experienced by animals. Humans have the ability to communicate their experiences, and what they feel. Since animals cannot communicate with us, there’s a huge assumption by animal activists that animals have emotional responses and the ability to reason and think, in the same way that humans do. We simply do not know if animals are capable of reasoning and cognitive thought, therefore we cannot attribute human qualities of reasoning and cognitive thought on animals as the activists would like."
Mr. Bekoff rightly expressed shock and dismay at the ludicrous nature of such an assertion. The sentient nature of non-human animals is not a debatable point. Read here “The Cambridge Declaration of Consciousness”: https://www.egg-truth.com/egg-blog/2019/5/13/the-cambridge-declaration-on-consciousness
We understand that the OFA and its members have no interest in the public ever seeing how farmed animals are genetically manipulated, routinely mutilated, altered, confined, prodded, transported and slaughtered in Ontario – this wouldn’t be good for business.
We also understand that the OFA and its members have to assume a level of extreme, cognitive dissonance on these matters to assuage any moral culpability in their collective treatment of farmed animals.
The OFA is free to live in a universe where up is down, left is right and animals are not sentient. What is most outrageous is the OFA either knowingly and willingly lied to the standing committee, or were in possession of such a level of stupidity as to warrant them from being barred from making any submissions related to farmed animal welfare in future. Any credibility they may have had in the eyes of the public should be completely shattered.
Given taxpayers money is used to subsidize and help fund an organization that attempts to fool elected officials and the public by pretending they have some unique insight into the subject at hand, is of great offense and a colossal misallocation of government funds.
Bill 156 is transparent in what it is attempting to do – deny the public from scrutinizing how our food is produced. Bill 156 has nothing to do with safety. This was an industry driven agenda and we object to the OFA attempting to ‘hoodwink’ the standing committee, and thus the public. This is a classic example of regulatory capture and an affront to democracy, free speech and the public’s right to know. For those of you who supported this bill you have succeeded in concealing animal cruelty in our food system – history will judge you, and it won’t be kind.
We look forward to future court challenges on this Bill and it’s inevitable failure.

The Executive Director of Egg-Truth.com is interviewed by a Toronto, Canada talk show, “Calling All Vegans”. Here’s what he had to say about eggs, how Egg-Truth came to be, and discusses the recent advertising campaign that took place over the course of April and May, 2019.
Balanced Perspectives
One of the many challenges of explaining to consumers the true nature of egg production, are stories that are disseminated in the media such as this.
One of the many challenges of explaining to consumers the true nature of egg production, are stories that are disseminated in the media such as this.
Not only does it promote the idea that egg production is benign, it also becomes the unwitting, and FREE, marketing arm of the egg industry’s public relations machine. Through their contrived nutrition studies and financial capacity (some of which is subsidized by taxpayers), the egg industry already has unrivaled access and reach to manipulate public perception through their marketing and advertising initiatives.
For our efforts, we can only respond to this video story by sending a letter to “viewer mail” on their website (see below). Hopefully, this will catch someone’s eye and forward to the journalist who did the story. And maybe in the future we will have an opportunity to provide another perspective and let the public decide.
Moral and social progress is dependent entirely upon information and the news media has an obligation to provide balanced perspectives. Their complicity in doing the work of a commercial enterprise is not what real journalism is supposed to do. This type of interest story clearly panders to the demographic of their audience which is, in large part, rural. We can only presume that this ingratiates their network to potential advertisers with whom their sales department will be eternally grateful.
Thus, another example of why news departments should never be a profit center for corporate owners and shareholders.

Our Position on Cage Free Initiatives
Single-issue campaigns, such as cage-free initiatives, have long been a focus of many animal rights organizations like HSUS.
The Humane Society of the United States recently announced what they claim is a huge victory for caged hens in the state of Washington.
Single-issue campaigns, such as cage-free initiatives, have long been a focus of many animal rights organizations like HSUS. There is no doubt living on litter (assuming it is dry and properly cycled) vs. a wire floor for 18 months is less cruel. However, some “free-range” environments still use metal or wire flooring to allow urine and faeces to pass through into the manure pits below (see image below). Nonetheless, caged environments generally tend to provide hens the living space of about 8.5” x 11”. Cage-free environments could potentially give a hen about the equivalent of 12” x 12”.
The method of housing depicted above is considered by many as “free-range”.
However, what is the data showing us as to the effectiveness of these campaigns and are they really a victory for hens forced to endure endless egg laying?
Flock sizes and egg consumption in the U.K., Canada and the United States in 2017 and 2018 are at their highest levels in history and will continue to grow due to demand. As the general public are largely ignorant of standard practices in the egg industry, cage-free initiatives wrongly focus public attention on only one of the many cruel aspects of egg production - the laying phase. Given the general public already does not see the same moral imperative on the issue of egg laying hens with, say, animals used for meat, cage-free initiatives reinforce this false notion and helps to remove any ethical concerns the public may have once had about eggs. And if you doubt this, just read some of the comments on HSUS’s Facebook page as it relates to this “victory” (see below).
And the reality is, for cage-free farms to remain economically competitive in the early days of transition, they will have to increase their stocking densities and/or increase the number of hens per barn. And these hens will still be subject to many of the same illnesses and disease that afflict caged hens. And possibly a few more they wouldn’t have had in a caged environment.
The argument that "cage-free" will increase the price of eggs and thus drive down consumption is not necessarily supported by the data. Once large food retailers and restaurants like McDonald's finally convert their massive, global supply chains to cage-free, the price gap between cage-free and caged eggs will ultimately narrow at the hand of market pressures until there is virtually little to no difference once adjusted for inflation.
Reducetarianism and flexitarianism are also contributing to the increase in egg consumption as consumers seek out protein alternatives for meat. While plant-based proteins are part of those alternative choices, so too are eggs. Single-issue campaigns have not been effective thus far for hens forced to lay eggs. Had they been then we would see egg consumption trending lower, not at an all-time high with projected demand going down, not up. And given that egg production, qualitatively and quantitatively, is the most cruel form of animal agriculture on the planet, this is not good news in terms of reducing overall animal suffering. If egg consumption is at historic highs and will continue to go up, so too will maceration, debeaking, vaccinations, transport and slaughter.
Follow Your Heart’s “VeganEgg”.
We believe the animal rights movement has reached a tipping point. And with the myriad of plant-based alternatives and compassionate choices available, the time has come for a much bigger focus on the care tradition and advocating for leaving all animal foods, including eggs, off our plates. Unfortunately, large animal rights organizations like HSUS and others have not evolved their strategies.
Cage-free legislation is not a victory for animals. It is an anthropocentric justification to make us feel better that we are achieving a measure of success when all the metrics point in the other direction.
Note: this post was updated on May 22 to include a photo of free-range hens on a perforated steel flooring.

The Advertising Campaign
It has been a while since we’ve posted to our blog. We’ve been really, really busy with a major advertising campaign and community outreach program that has been in the planning phase for many, many weeks.

What We’ve Been Up To!
It has been a while since we’ve posted to our blog. We’ve been really busy with a major advertising campaign and community outreach program that has been in the planning phase for many weeks.
And as of Easter Monday, that campaign has launched! We’re very, very excited and proud of what we’ve accomplished and we wanted to share with our readers all the details.
Creative for interior ad faces.
Outdoor Advertising
We have placed 42 transit shelter posters in key locations throughout the city of Toronto - North America’s fourth largest urban centre. There are two versions of the creative. The first one (seen in the mock-up above) is for exterior faces where sight-lines are long and read times are short. The other creative is for interior faces only and contains a multitude of descriptions about the many illnesses and conditions hens forced to lay eggs endure. The central image is of a “spent” hen whom we’ve called “Lucy”. Lucy is representative of the millions of hens condemned to lay eggs in barns all over the world. Our campaign is using the hashtag #thisislucy.
This campaign will run for 4 weeks with a 2 week bonus. We already have some local followers who have spotted our posters and have begun sending us their selfies alongside them.
We hope in the coming weeks, the millions of commuters who will see these posters will appreciate the realities of egg production and will visit our website, begin to look for alternatives and make compassionate food choices going forward.
“Egg-Free Get Started!”
On Saturday, April 27th, 17,500 copies of our egg-free starter kit will be distributed through The Toronto Star - Canada’s largest circulation newspaper! This full-colour, 8-page, digest sized booklet will feature delicious egg-free recipes and baking tips, a chance to meet Lady Heisenberg of Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary along with an invitation to visit the farm. Our booklet will also include information on the truth about modern day egg production.
A sample of our 8-page, full-colour booklet.
On the back cover, and with the courtesy of the good folks at Follow Your Heart, there is a $1 OFF coupon for any Follow Your Heart or Earth Island product including VeganEgg! These delicious, cruelty-free products are now available in most major grocery store chains and specialty grocery stores in Toronto.
Social Media
Starting Tuesday, April 23rd, a major social media ad campaign on Facebook and Instagram will invite users to visit a dedicated page on our website where Lucy asks them to “Leave Eggs OFF their plate . . . for HER!”. There will be additional animal welfare information related to egg production, links to other information on our website and a PDF, downloadable version of the 8-page booklet which we have also made available for our readers here. Note: only the colour, printed version inserted into the Toronto Star has the $1 OFF coupon - if you are in the Toronto area, be sure to try and pick up a copy of the Saturday edition of The Star.

Street Campaigns
With the assistance of the volunteers at Cube of Truth, we will be conducting an ‘Egg-Cube-of-Truth’ at two major intersections in downtown and midtown Toronto: Yonge-Dundas Square and Yonge & Eglinton on Friday, May 3rd. Here passer’s-by will be able to view video of standard industry practices at hatcheries, layer facilities and slaughter houses. They will also be offered a copy of our 8-page booklet.
In early May, Vegan Outreach will be leafleting our booklet in several key locations in Toronto as well. We anticipate they will be able to distribute approximately 1500 booklets!
In addition to helping to educate consumers about the true nature of egg production and create awareness around egg-free alternatives, we hope to demonstrate the impact our campaign will have. If we can establish proof-of-concept, we hope to be able replicate this same campaign in other cities across North America with the support of donors.
If you would like more information on our campaign, please feel free to reach us via our Contact Us page. We are always receptive to those seeking to help coordinate other efforts in other locations across Canada and the U.S.
Best regards,
Nigel Osborne

Welcome to Egg-Truth!
Welcome to Egg-Truth! A website designed to educate and inform consumers, and the public at large, about the true nature of: industrialized egg production, it's affect on human health, the environment, and most importantly, the hens who endure one of the most miserable and heavily exploited existences in all of animal agriculture.
Welcome to Egg-Truth! A website designed to educate and inform consumers, and the public at large, about the true nature of industrialized egg production, it's affect on human health, the environment, and most importantly, the hens who endure one of the most miserable and heavily exploited existences in all of animal agriculture.
Some of the images and content on this web site are of a graphic nature - if you are upset by this, we are sorry. However, it is virtually impossible to tell the true story of egg production and its associated horrors without the use of still images and video. As they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words", and by extension, a video could be worth 10,000.
Often, it is human nature to avert our eyes when we see things that are upsetting, violent or graphic in nature. It is our mind attempting to avoid any potential trauma as a result of looking at unpleasant imagery. Unfortunately, given the amount of eggs consumed globally, our appetite for eggs contributes to the suffering of hens on an unprecedented scale. No animal, with perhaps the exception of chickens raised for meat, endures more suffering, qualitatively and quantitatively, than egg laying hens.
Chickens are social, intelligent and sensitive creatures who are capable of exhibiting problem solving, critical thinking, empathy and a host of other cognitive functions we normally associate with the companion animals we keep in our homes like dogs and cats. Despite this, global, industrialized egg production sees hens as merely a means to an end - a limitless supply of a commodity called: the 'egg'.
While it is true that eggs contain some goodness from a nutritional standpoint, there is nothing healthy in eggs that can't be obtained in far healthier forms of other foods where animal welfare is much less of a concern or not at all. And, many of those foods do not contain the constituents in eggs that are unhealthy and contribute over time to various diseases in humans.
Environmentally speaking, the urine, faeces, methane, ammonia and other toxic gases that are a by-product of billions of hens farmed and slaughtered annually, must be remediated. However, the soil, ground water, rivers, streams, ponds, lakes and coastal run-off areas around the world pay the price as the final destination for much of this waste - and this has a negative impact on our health and wildlife as well. Animal agriculture has become under increasing scrutiny for the amount of water and land dedicated to hydrate farmed animals and to grow food to feed billions of animals confined in feed lots, sheds and barns around the world. And this is no less of a concern with egg production as it is with other species farmed and harvested for human consumption.
We hope you find this website informative. We also hope you share it far and wide - our goal is to become the #1 destination on the web for fact-based information on global, egg production. A lofty goal no doubt, but with your help, we hope to get there one day - and the sooner the better! We intend to post regularly on our blog and our social media channels as they come on-line. So please check back with us frequently, and if you have any questions, need additional information or have suggestions for our website, don't hesitate to reach us via our Contact Us page.
Many thanks!
